










Description
An M1 Garand converted to 7.62 NATO by the Navy. The new designation then became the MkII rifle. This is an early example using the original 30.06 barrel and a chamber insert to accommodate the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. Approximately 15,000 M1s were converted into the “Mod 0” configuration by American Machine and Foundry between 1965 and 1966. The chamber insert method produced mixed results, often coming loose while firing. Later Navy Garands modified by H&R utilized a dedicated 7.62 barrel and were redesignated MkII, Mod 1. Other alternations included an enlarged gas port to and the installation of a plastic spacer to prevent accidental loading of 30.06 ammunition.
This example is a CMP rifle, sold in 2012 to the public. Overall condition is very good. These are becoming quite collectible and are an interesting variation of the greatest battle ever fielded.
The CMP certificate and data sheets will be included with this rifle. As with rifles that went through multiple arsenal rebuilds it contains a mixture of parts:

*Note: It is not advisable to remove the chamber insert and attempt to fire 30.06 ammunition through this rifle as the gas port was enlarged as part of the conversion process. These rifles were designed to fire 7.62 NATO and not .308 Winchester.
